Biography: Harold Washington was an American lawyer who served as the 51st Mayor of Chicago, and the city's first African-American mayor.
He retained this office from 1983 until hist death in 1987.
Washington was prior to this a member of the United States House of Representatives (1981-1983), before which he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives (1965-1976) and Illinois State Senate (1977-1980).
